Honolulu, HI – The Daughters of Hawaii will celebrate Queen Emma’s 178th birthday, life and legacy and the opening of a new exhibit on Thursday January 2, 2014, at Hanaiakamalama, Queen Emma Summer Palace. New additions of artifacts and quotes to the museum’s current exhibit will present Queen Emma’s travels through parts of Latin America, Europe, and North America between August 1862 and November 1863.

The museum’s exhibition – “Kiakahi - A Purposed Journey” – will be open January 2, 2014 through March 27, 2014. The exhibit will focus on Queen Emma’s trips abroad to Latin America, Europe, and North America in her efforts to fundraise monies to support the mission of the Anglican Church in Hawaii as one of the best means to help the plight of the native Hawaiian people during the mid 1800’s…”My motives in visiting London are not for display or enjoyment; they are…to save if possible my dying people.” Artifacts related to her travels and mission will be located throughout the museum and are accompanied by display cards that provide period specific flags and relevant information. The front gallery will display an 1865 world map charting the path of Queen Emma’s journey.

A short program will begin at 11:00 am. at Emmalani Hale with light refreshments to follow. Free admission to the palace on January 2nd from 9:00 – 4:00 pm. For more information contact the Daughters of Hawaii at (808) 595-6291 or email: info@daughtersofhawaii.org.
